"More coffee, Miss?" A soft voice asked, jerking Sonya from her focus on what she had been writing down in her new journal and casting a blank stare at the waitress standing there rather awkwardly, coffee pot held in one hand. "Oh, Right, yes. That would be fantastic." She said brightly, brushing a hand through her short, blondish hair sheepishly while watching the woman refill her empty cup then move away. Dropping the pen she had been gripping in her right hand, Sonya stretched out her fingers with a faint grimace as the muscles protested about moving after staying put for so long.

For the past three hours she had been attempting to fill her journal with everything that had happened while hiding as Tyra, including the events that lead up to returning her Time Lord consciousness into her body before it had died. I don't think I've ever heard the phrase 'race to the finish' ever used so aptly before. She mused with quiet amusement, her eyes running over the words she had scribbled onto the page before her, then shut the book softly to replace it in her bag.

Leaning back against her seat, Sonya lifted the steaming cup of coffee to her lips, eyes drifting to the window beside her, watching everyone outside go about their lives in the fading light of day. Even after living for four years believing she was the human Tyra, Sonya still found how they rushed about their tasks amusing and baffling at the same time. Granted they had such little time left when comparing their lives against hers. Definitely compared to me considering how I have a knack for cheating death beside the usual regenerations. With a shake of her head, Sonya finished her cup of coffee and placed enough money on the table to pay for and tip the waitress before getting to her feet and heading for the door to join the crowds even in the last flickers of light that shone down on the city of New York. Sonya made her way down the sidewalk, no destination in mind and letting her feet take her wherever they pleased.

Just like the good old days, right? She grinned to herself, hands tucked into pockets and eyes drifting up to the tall buildings towering over everyone on the ground with her.

Returns can be Bittersweet Empty
PostSubject: Re: Returns can be Bittersweet   Returns can be Bittersweet I_icon_minitimeFri Sep 19, 2014 11:13 pm

'A man on a mission' was a rather accurate term for young master Artemis as he matched his stride to that of the moving crowd headed in various directions all over the city. He was in search of something rather than someone on this particular job. He slipped his hands into the pockets of his dark blue denim jeans and allowed his ankle length gray coat to flare out behind him with every step. His gaze switched every so often from the handheld mobile he was holding in his hand and the enormous crowd of civilians ahead of him. The idea was to not attract attention to himself, so running into the locals was definitely something he figured avoiding would be best.

An hour and a half of searching through most of the city's main streets had turned up nothing, and he was beginning to grow more impatient with time. All his research and trackers had pointed him to this time and location. Assuming that his instrument readings were correct, though they had turned up incorrect information on several occasions already, he should be on the right trail. His mobile wasn't for tracking the object he sought yet he found an unfathomable urge to program an energy tracker into it. Using a simple GPS around New York and still getting lost wasn't going to get him anywhere fast, especially if he had no specific coordinates to lock onto. He sighed, looking up to the sky with annoyance. This was going to be a long mission.

He slipped the mobile back into the back pocket of his jeans, having decided to just go wherever it was that the large amount of people seemed to split up at. He could probably afford a little time to take in the city, couldn't he? He minions would keep things running smoothly back on his ship so he could take all the time he needed out here so long as he returned with the device he came here to find. After passing a few shops, Artemis began to notice the incredibly large swarm of girls that were clearly trying to get as close to him as possible without actually alerting him to their presence. Some even had their phones out to take a snapshot of him. He smirked, amused by the ordeal but ignored them. New York, he thought as he briefly glanced out at the roads and up at the tall buildings that towered over everything else, what do you have to offer?

PostSubject: Re: Returns can be Bittersweet   Returns can be Bittersweet I_icon_minitimeFri Sep 19, 2014 11:21 pm

A loud chattering caught Sonya's attention from across the street, earning a scowl in the direction of the large group of girls that had gathered to follow a poor man as he walked along, minding his own business. "Really? Is it so hard to give someone their space when they obviously don't care what your doing?" She hissed in an undertone, already crossing the street without looking, her intent on the group of giggling girls and not the cars as they honked angerly at her as she passed. "Oh shut up already!" She shouted at the girls and cars, causing several people around her to stare in confusion and some in irritation considering they were busy talking on their phones at the time.

"Not you, I'm talking to the giggling idiots over there." Sonya snapped at a well-dressed business man that cast her a rather angry look before stalking off in the other direction. "Yes you girls. Do you have any idea how annoying people like you are? Following around someone just because they look good or have a nice smile. It's pointless, stupid and gives everyone around you an idea of just how low your IQ is. Now if you don't want to make me even more irritated, I suggest you waltz off and find someone else to stalk that isn't in my vicinity." Raising an eyebrow, Sonya rose to her full 5'8" height, not very impressive, but the cold look she gave the girls gaping at her made up for it as they slowly dispersed into the crowd. "Blimey, stupid girls. I swear I'm going to go mad trying to keep them away from people."

PostSubject: Re: Returns can be Bittersweet   Returns can be Bittersweet I_icon_minitimeFri Sep 19, 2014 11:41 pm

The girls hadn't bothered him at all; they never did and he was used to these types of occurrences at any rate. Most women followed after him. It was rather amusing to see them that way though he never really acted on it. There had been a few flings, truth be told, but those were all for the purpose of his endeavors. None of it meant anything, and they had been properly disposed of afterwards. It wasn't until he heard another woman's voice snapping at the trail of starstruck women that he gazed in that direction. More times than not, he just lost them. Rarely did he have someone act on scaring them off. He appreciated the gesture, however, and flashed her his trademark vampire smile along with a slight wink as a token of his appreciation.

"Much obliged," he said in his usual husky and slightly raspy tones. The action of speaking caused his throat to burn with the ever so familiar need for a cool liquid of some kind to dull the pain though he made no notice of this, having been used to it for years now. He swept his hand through his hair, careful not to accidentally scratch the scar on his face that ran all the way up to his hairline. Placing two fingers to his temple and flicking them outward in a wave of leave, he turned on his heel. "It's a pleasure to have met a decent lady like yourself."

"Decent lady? I've never been called that before." Sonya quipped, falling into step beside the man without bothering to ask. "Though you, I'd be a bit more reserved and consider it a compliment for now." She added as an after attempt of being polite before lifting her shoulders into a shrug, her legs stepping out farther in order to keep up with his stride while they passed through the crowds. "And to be honest, I didn't do that to save you from them. They just irritate me and I hate seeing idiots run around making everyone else feel like their own IQ is lowering in their presence."

Tossing a quick look over her shoulder, she scanned the people behind them before spotting a couple of the girls from the same group following them at a safer distance, obvious dislike written on their faces at the fact she was walking next to their item of interest. "Anyway, it gives me a little satisfaction to know I can scare girls off when they're bugging people like that." Sonya added, turning back around to face the direction they were walking in. "What brings you to New York anyway? Not to be pushy, but you stick out like a sore thumb, and that wasn't from the fangirls following you around either."

Returns can be Bittersweet Empty
PostSubject: Re: Returns can be Bittersweet   Returns can be Bittersweet I_icon_minitimeSat Sep 20, 2014 12:00 am

Artemis chuckled softly, not minding as the woman fell into step with him. He had been expecting it, actually. Something about this woman told him that she knew this place well. She might be useful in his expedition, if he played his cards correctly. Keeping with his gentlemanly persona, he replied, "Anyone who can clearly see the misuse of neural activity and publicly announces it without a second thought of emotional trauma to another party is part of the very definition to the word 'decent.' I can understand your irritation with them. Thinking does not appear to high on their priority list, and I daresay that is irreversible to the point of being contagious." He smirked, amused at the thought of lower IQs being contagious though he had personally come in contact with many individuals that he had felt may have killed a few of his intelligence points.

He was well aware that many of the women from before were still following him though they were now keeping at a distance since this woman was now walking beside him. She was almost like a bodyguard. It was rather amusing, as was her assessment of him. He had been told many things, but he was sure he had never been told that he was noticeable to that point. "Well, that must be the reason for all my adoring fans as of late," He paused for a brief moment, thinking over his words carefully. "I'm a collector. I specialize in antiques, and there's one particular object, a pocket watch that I believe is located here in New York. I was on my way to find it though the trouble is that I'm not entirely certain as to its exact whereabouts. It's moved from place to place. The last bit of intel I gathered from one of my colleagues suggested that it may be here, so here I am."

PostSubject: Re: Returns can be Bittersweet   Returns can be Bittersweet I_icon_minitimeSat Sep 20, 2014 12:10 am

Sonya stayed silent, thinking over his explanation before casting a sideways glance in his direction. "You're about as much as an antique collector as I am human. Cut to the chase, what's about this watch that's so damn important you have to get your hands on it?" She said bluntly, not bothering with beating around the bush or even introducing herself even. Without glancing around, she directed the man down a back road and into a seedier part of new York, littered with trash and rubbish, broken cars and wary looking people hiding out in the shadows when they drew near.

"If it's alien tech, I know a guy that can get his hands on nearly anything Alien. Besides what I have, but that's beside the point really. I don't make it a habit to go about selling my possessions." Sonya went on, one hand waving around in the air while she spoke, ignoring the vague people that walked around them and hid when they grew too close. "Though I will warn you, he charges an arm and leg for nearly anything he has for sale. And the things he... Quote 'Doesn't' unquote, have for sale, cost you a few years of your life if he could ever manage a way to do it."

Pausing in her tirade, Sonya stopped outside of a dirty red door with paper taped over it's windows. The walls of the shop had no windows themselves, but plenty of advertisements taped to the brick to decorate the outside. Flashing the man a grin, she reached over and tugged the door open, a faint bell chiming as she stepped inside and wandered into the dusty and crowded isles filled with various objects that had no real purpose other than they were alien.

Returns can be Bittersweet Empty
PostSubject: Re: Returns can be Bittersweet   Returns can be Bittersweet I_icon_minitimeSat Sep 20, 2014 9:30 am

(OOC: Ok, I barged in, like I said I would. >.> Let me know if I messed something up on the shop owner, or whether the shop owner should know 10, or something...or something else. I tried to be vague about him. Razz)

There was no doubt, that the Doctor had this habit of showing up any time, any place, barging in as if he belonged there. And the Metacrisis Doctor shared a similar trait as he "perused" the shop of the mysterious owner. As interested as he was in all the alien "junk," he was highly skeptical as to where this man got it all from. Usually most of the alien tech ended up in Torchwood or Unit...just how dangerous was it for someone to walk in here, purchase a disruptor pistol, and walk off using it? Well...actually, he probably only dealt with aliens, which as long as they weren't Daleks, Cybermen, and possibly Captain Jack, it was probably more or less okay.

By now, from the owner's reactions, he had probably annoyed him thoroughly, and he was almost oblivious to it. Almost. And then the bell tinkled, and like a dog perking its ears at the noise, the Doctor poked his head out of the dusty shelves he had been behind. He saw a man of a dubious nature walk in, and he watched those cold eyes that seemed to speak of something cold...something sinister...something he didn't like.

Then he was thrown off by another figure who followed him shortly after. Sonya! Second generation, from the looks of her. Or wait, was that third...he was getting all mixed up lately. But he had his large trademark grin on his face as he stepped out of the shadows, and almost ran into them as he moved in front of her. "Sonya! Blimey, it's been a long time. I was just talking to your friend here," he gestured at the shop attendant behind him. "I think he's your friend. Is he your friend? Anyway..." Then his grin changed to an almost serious gaze, but with a merry twinkle in his eyes. "Don't tell me...I didn't change into him did I?" he asked as he scrutinized the man beside her. "Nice hair, I'd have shaved though," he added offhandedly.

Returns can be Bittersweet Empty
PostSubject: Re: Returns can be Bittersweet   Returns can be Bittersweet I_icon_minitimeSat Sep 20, 2014 3:22 pm

Artemis smirked, not at all surprised by her level of perception. Things were going rather smoothly, if he had to give a description as to his mission progress. What was working out even better was that he was not only able to find a specialist in alien technology but he was also in the presence of an alien already. Part of him wondered which species he was talking to. He already had quite a collection of loyal subjects fighting for him. Surely, another to join the group would be an asset. "You're perceptive," he told her evenly, dropping most of his persona and getting down to business, "and, evidently, not human." There was an unspoken question tacked on to the last part that he, honestly, wasn't expecting her to answer given that she hadn't introduced herself yet.

"I am, actually, a collector of sorts, but not in most human terms. I am collecting a very specific list of items, most of which I have gathered. This watch, a bit unusual piece of alien technology, is capable of helping me locate a certain someone. A woman from my own time period that has been thrown through time, rather unwillingly I might add. I need to find her and bring her home." He paused as the woman led the way into a secluded little shop. All of the items, he could tell, were alien in origin, but none were what he was looking for yet. He'd probably have to ask the shopkeeper or someone who knew their way around.

Artemis quirked an eyebrow when they were approached by a man who appeared to know the woman he was accompanying. Sonya, was her name. They appeared to friends, at the very least. When the man began studying him, Artemis smirked at his assessment. He shook his head, amused. "We are two completely different beings, I assure you," he replied to the man. He ran his fingertips over the scruff on his face, finding that he did need a shave. A little bit of scruff was about the extent he could deal with, but he'd been so busy that he hadn't paid much attention to his own appearance.

Sonya tactfully ignored his unspoken question of what species she was, choosing to keep silent about that bit should he turn out to be a collector of aliens as well. Not something she would enjoy fighting with him about. "So, this watch can connect you to someone that's lost in time. Interesting." She murmured, already her mind going over several different things it could be before being intrupted by a familiar face grinning at the two of them. "Doctor? What the hell are you doing in New York?" She asked in pleasant surprise, already walking up to the familiar man and embracing him in a tight hug.

"This would be... No idea, never asked for a name, but he isn't you thank goodness. I'd have to say, if you turned into him, I'd smack you." She said with a wave of the hand, completely unaware she probably insulted the man with her before flashing the Doctor a wide grin. "It's been a while, though I'll probably run into you more than the other version of you with the box. The man is impossible to track down now, four years I vanish and he takes off and buries himself so deeply in history I can't follow him." She shook her head in mock discust before leading the way towards the back of the store where the owner stood, eyeing them with distrust.

"Relax Marluox. They're with me, you can drop the shimmer now." Sonya laughed at the man's expression before a spark of recognition shone in his eyes and he flicked a button on his wrist, letting the appearance he held vanish and be replaced by his Vinvochi form instead. "Sonya, last I heard you were dead." Marloux said conversationally, already reaching under the counter to pull out a small box with his more expensive or rare objects than the ones he had displayed around the shop. "What are you looking for this time, girlie?"

"A watch capable of tracking a DNA code through the vortex if you don't mind. Tall, dark and scary over here is looking for one so he can find someone that means a lot to him. Ignore the 'I'm going to eat you' look in his eyes, I think he looks like that all of the time."

PostSubject: Re: Returns can be Bittersweet   Returns can be Bittersweet I_icon_minitimeSat Sep 20, 2014 6:07 pm

The grin appeared back on his face as Sonya squeezed, and he gave her a tight, if somewhat affectionate hug in return. "Well somehow I entered this contest, I'm not even sure how I did, cause I don't remember doing so. But a congratulations letter came in, and so I took a plane. That was an interesting experience in itself," he commented thoughtfully. "Did you know, you need a little blue book to get anywhere?" As he spoke, he pulled out a british passport, waved it in the air, then thrust it back into the pocket of his blue suit. "Blimey, they wouldn't let me on the plane without it."

Until Sonya had referred to the man again, he'd completely forgotten about him. His gaze went over to the man, and while he still kept the grin on his face, he still flashed him the same scrutinizing gaze. It was gone in an instant as Sonya mentioned his other half, and he turned his gaze back to her. "Why? Don't have a tardis to borrow?" he joked with a grin, remembering the last time she had "borrowed" his past incarnation's Tardis. That would of course lead to some embaressing paradoxes, but it seemed she was more or less stuck in the same period he was. Without a Tardis.

As Sonya moved to the counter, he sauntered after her, almost smirking as the shop owner deactivated his shimmer. He watched the man in his own amusement, noting with satisfaction he could still pick up minute traces of stuff normal humans couldn't. "Is this one of your hobbies now? Playing dead?" he remarked as he leaned on the counter, his chin going in his hand as he stared first at the shop owner, and then at the unknown man. "I'm sure he does," the Doctor commented idly as he stared at him, particularly at those deep cold green eyes he seemed to have. "A loved one? Or...someone else?" He left his comment up to interpretation as he waited for the man to answer.

PostSubject: Re: Returns can be Bittersweet   Returns can be Bittersweet I_icon_minitimeSun Sep 21, 2014 2:41 pm

Artemis followed Sonya to the counter, where the shopkeeper deactivated his shimmer and stood on the opposite side of the counter facing them. He could pick up on the tension in the room as it rose a notch now that they were getting down to business. He took out his mobile and pulled up an image on its screen, which he then slid across the counter for the shopkeeper to see. "I am looking for this object, specifically," he said darkly, his crimson orbs narrowing as he gave the man a few moments to study the image before taking his phone back.

On the screen was a large 18th century watch the symbol of an ouroboros on its cover. It had rusted with time, but still held tints of its original gold manufacturing. Along its edges were various symbols from around the globe, each depicting the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. The second half of the screen showed what the watch looked like when opened. There wasn't a clock inside, but instead, a compass with a needle that had a small, droplet sized hole in the tip. It bore the same ouroboros symbol from the cover on its handle. The chain was also gold and rusty. It was made from a long string of star chains rather than the traditional circular or ovular chain links.

During those few moments of allowing the shopkeeper to study the images of the watch, Artemis briefly returned to the conversation but kept his answers vague. The less involved these people got, the better it was for them. "My name is Artemis," he stated indifferently. "And in response to your question, both a loved one and another." He left both Sonya and this Doctor to their own interpretations of his meaning. Now that the ball was finally rolling in, perhaps, the right direction, he had no time to waste.

Eying Artemis curiously, Sonya nodded quietly at Marluox, giving him the go-ahead to trust the pushy man and show him his wares. Frowning for a moment, the Vinvochi thought over the image he had been shown, trying to remember exactly where he might have seen a 'watch' like that and if he had one like it at all. "I can't promise anything to be honest. But I have a box full of items that look familiar to it. You're welcome to take a look, but I'm not telling you I have it at all. Only offering to let you look and see." He warned before turning and disappearing back into a door behind the counter, leaving the three standing there at the counter while he searched for the box.

"So... A sister then?" Sonya finally said idly, not really looking at Artemis, her blue eyes were locked on a nearby box that looked vaguely like a Rumarian puzzle cube but she couldn't be sure unless she had a power cell to put in and check it over. "A family member you're close to at least. I'm not guessing a mother, no one is ever that close to their mother. Aunt maybe, but I doubt that from the way you're going about trying to find them, as if you're protecting them. So, logical choice would be sister." Casting a quick look over at Meta, she tipped her head to the side slightly, subtly suggesting he move to the side a bit in case their new 'friend' got it into his head that they were enemies rather than helpful people.

The Doctor would've tried to peer at the phone to see what exactly the man was showing the clerk, but any more leaning would've caused him to fall over the counter. From what he could tell from the glare, the screen showed white and gold...and that was about it. Given Sonya said watch, all he could guess was some sort of item resembling a fob watch, and while he could think of a few items, he was not about to suggest any that might help this man.

He was also entirely vague in his answer, something that could've been explained as suspicion of Sonya and himself...or of malicious intent. Was this person he was trying to track down REALLY someone important to him? Was the cold bitterness in his eyes due to loss? If so, who caused the loss? How much of it was due to wanting to find this someone, and wanting to hurt the one responsible? If he and Sonya helped him find the watch, and thus this person, would they be helping him kill someone? While these thoughts burned in his mind, and he wanted to probe the stranger heavily, he refrained from interrogating him. For the moment.

"Artemis," he commented as he caught the name. "I once met a person named that. Interesting fellow. Tried to kill a bunch of people. I stopped him." At a look from Sonya, he pushed himself off the counter idly, raising his eyebrows as he looked over at Artemis, then moved away from the two to look at a small display cabinet opposite the main counter. He let Sonya ask her questions, while he rubbed the dirt off a piece of metal, letting it reflect the happenings in the background.

Artemis nodded silently as the shopkeeper warned him that he may not have the watch. Honestly, he wasn't expecting the man to. He had traveled through high waters just to find it, and each destination had ended in failure. He was starting to doubt the watch's existence though part of him remained hopeful. All of his goals, his dreams could not be accomplished until he found her. She was the key to the whole plan. Of course, he hadn't known that when he first began his travels, but now that he knew the entire story, he planned on making good with the promise he had made years ago. Despite his hard outer exterior, he was a man of honor. He never broke his word when it was given, which of course, had been years earlier but still valid nonetheless.

"It's a common name for hunters," he stated sardonically, his vampire smile returning for a moment or two. He would have tried to add a little mock reassurance to that statement though it felt unnecessary considering how his gentlemanly persona had dropped off completely in such a short period of time. There was no sense in trying to revive it now. It was clear that both Sonya and the Doctor were now on edge and trying to feel him out, trying to make out what his character could possibly be. The situation was like a scene from a comedy in his eyes. People, and aliens, were sometimes easily toyed with until the end. He was expecting them to try and thwart his, truth be told, and that was what he was looking forward to the most. It was only when Sonya mentioned his sister did his expression completely soften, turning to one of longing and grief.

It felt like an eternity since he had last laid eyes on his beloved younger sister, Minerva. She had been so spirited and optimistic for someone with such low health. Despite all their differences, he remembered how grateful he was to have had his older brother there during those harder times. Aaron was not only his brother, but a father to both he and Minerva. With his brother gone, Minerva was all Artemis had left in the way of family and he didn't even know if she was alive. Those dark days still haunted his dreams. He momentarily shut his eyes to keep the visions from clouding his sight. There was work to be done here still. Memory lane could wait.

"Yes," he sadly replied, his hand reaching up and tracing the scar running across his throat. It was the scar that kept him from speaking normally, and one of the many reminders of his purpose. "I am looking for my sister." He let the subject linger in the air, refusing to go into further detail. The answer to the inevitable question, 'What happened?' was clearly visible on his face, distorting his once smooth skin from the corner of his eye up to the edge of his hairline in a clean cut gash that remained all these years.
