To be Without a Cause

Hollow footsteps echoed along the hallway, alerting Tyra of their approach. Her captors, caretakers, those that keep her hidden. Those footsteps were heavy, weighted. Telling her what news they brought wasn't good, not a bit. Sitting up on her cot, she folded her hands on her lap and waited, eyes locked on the door, waiting to hear the tumbler of the lock click then the slight squeek of hinges as the door fell open to reveal the vague outline of a woman.

"It's time."

Eyes snapped open, staring at the dark, disorientation caused confusion until the faint sounds of traffic drifted from the open window across from the bed she lay in. Of course, she was in a motel for the night. Frowning slightly, Tyra sat up and rubbed a hand through her messy hair, staring at the carpet between her feet, trying to piece together the fragments of her dream before they vanished completely. Where the hell did that come from? Shaking her head, she gave up and got to her feet, heading over to the beeping her phone was making, the alarm she set going off seconds after she woke up.

"Right then... What to do." She muttered, turning towards the window and peering out from behind the curtain to watch the city come to life in front of her. New York, one place she wanted to visit, but never had the time or energy to, until now anyway. After a full week of no calls, no jobs, nothing to do but wander around. She decided a little vacation couldn't hurt. New York, nothing bad happened here, not that she knew of. Most of what she ended up in the middle of was in London or the nearby towns. Feeling a faint smile curl her lips upwards, Tyra turned to get dressed. Time for a little sight-seeing.

The Doctor leaned over his control console, eyeing the mechanics as he worked on them then yanked over the scanner, "Emma!" he called over his shoulder, "Shouldn't take you that long to find new clothes!". Suddenly there was a blip, something appearing on the scanner then disappearing the next second. The time vortex wavered ,like a water when a rock fell into it, emitting from where the blip occurred, "Woo! Look at that!" The Doctor exclaimed, quickly setting the controls to spin into the spot where the blip happened.

With the TARDIS soaring towards the disruption in the time vortex, The Doctor turned his attention to the spiral staircase as he walked over to it. Grabbing the rail, The Doctor peered down it and called, "Emma! Come on! I'm busy being clever and brilliant up here and there's nobody to see me! Plus! I've found something on the scanner, time to allons-y!".

Turning towards the door, the TARDIS echoed the sound of a landing with a slight thrust running through the interior of the time machine. Smiling, curiosity got the best of The Doctor as he bolted to the double doors, not even thinking about his trench coat as he opened the doors and peered outside, "New York! We're in New York! Brilliant!".

With a final glance behind her at the hotel, Tyra studied the building with curiosity. Stone, it was made from stone, obviously old but still. No brick or anything, something she didn't see very often in London. Shaking her head, she grinned and turned back around, trying to decide exactly where to go before setting off in some random direction, letting her feet take her wherever they felt like for the time being.

A faintly familiar sound pricked her ears, prompting Tyra to turn around and frown at the crowded sidewalks. She knew that sound, almost too well from just her few encounters with the man. But this wasn't London, or England for that matter, she was in the United States for christ's sake, he couldn't be here. Casting one last frown around the area, she turned and hurried off, suddenly in a rush to get somewhere, anywhere other than there for the time being. Maybe a little restraunt for breakfast. Ham and eggs, bacon, coffee and some pancakes smothered in butter and syrup. A small grin perked her lips back up as Tyra lifted her head and began the search for a place to eat, stomach rumbling with each step she took. Yes, food, then she'd adress the noise.

"Damned machine...I hate it here." The Doctor grumbled in annoyance as he walked the streets of the Big Apple. A disruption in the time vortex forced him to land, and in this place no doubt. "Why in the hell am I here now? An infinite places in time and space, and I'm here. I can't leave so I'm stuck here.  Not groovy. Not one bit." The Doctor just wanted to see the Beatles live in Chicago,but apparently The TARDIS had other plans. He dragged himself along the streets, avoiding the seemingly irritated, and scarily bored New Yorkers.

Staring at the ground, The Doctor made his way through the city. "Where am I going?" That was when The Doctor bumped into a woman. "Sorr-....." He began before looking up at her. ".... Why?" He simply stated. Everywhere he went, even places he didn't want to be, someone crazy and violent showed up. It's not like she wanted to kill him. Or this version of him. Hell, maybe she already did. Thirteen hadn't really been in the "lets all kill The Doctor" loop in a while.

Shaking her head slightly, Tyra glanced up at the man and frowned at his expression. "Why what? Why was I walking right in the same path you were? It's called a sidewalk." Reaching up, she rubbed a hand over her head and let out a light sigh. "Not fair of me, you wouldn't have bumped into me if I had been looking either. Anyway, no one is seriously hurt. So, I'll be on my way." She tossed at him with a wry smile then edged around him on her way to the restraunt she spotted just moments ago.

As she reached for the handle of the restraunt, Tyra stopped, a bell ringing in her head suddenly at the sight of the man she just talked to. "No, another one. You have to be kidding me." She muttered, quickly shuffling around in her shoulder bag until her hand closed around the familiar worn material of her mother's Journal and pulled it out, shuffling through the pages until coming to a sketch of the man. "Right, so... I'm apparently a Doctor Magnet. Wonderful." Shaking her head in distain, she stuffed the journal back into the bag and ducked into the restraunt, in hopes that he wouldn't follow her in. "One bloody week, that's all I ask, one bloody week without running into one of his faces. Too much to ask, apparently." She muttered to herself, standing by the sign and waiting to be seated. "Way too much to ask."

"I don't know" The Doctor replied to Emma, stepping out from his TARDIS, gazing up at the skyscrapers and finally on the empire state building, "Well...there was a blip in the time vortex and the TARDIS chased after it and brought us here but besides that...i don't know". Pausing for a moment, The Doctor nonchalantly placed his hands into his pockets and sniffed as he looked back to Emma, "Still" he continued, "Doesn't hurt to check it out, besides there's only...hang on..what year is this? 2014? So that would make it....just about eight and a half million people. There we go. Eight and a half million people to check out, come on".

Turning back to the city, The Doctor laid eyes on the seemingly endless flow of cars hoarding the roads and the pile up of people clambering for room on the side walk, "Oh..." he sighed, "This is going to take longer than i thought". Reaching out his right hand, The Doctor snapped his fingers and the TARDIS doors shut and locked.

Looking over to Emma, The Doctor grinned, "You know your way around here miss Emma" he said, "So show me the places to see and the places to hide if someone was after you...i've got an odd feeling that's where we should look". As he finished speaking to Emma, The Doctor looked out to the sea of people and cars in front of him, squinting as his mind locked onto the feeling of another Time Lord.

While she waited, Tyra tapped her foot a bit impaitently while staring at the packed restraunt. Every table was full and none of them seemed to be emptying anytime soon. Huffing in irritation, she spun around and stalked out the doors, her frustration mainly stemming from the fact her stomach was empty and had been for hours now. It had nothing to do with the fact that she ran into one of the Doctors. Or making it worse by spying a familiar face of another as he and a woman walked towards her on the sidewalk.

"You have got to be kidding me. Are you stalking me or something? Honestly, I'm the one person you need to stay away from. You have to be stupid, or lacking common sense at least." She snapped at the man, her feet carrying her towards the two of them and planting her on the sidewalk in front of the Time Lord before she even thought about it. Tipping her head back, Tyra rested her hands on her hips and squinted her eyes up at the man with a deep frown. "What do you want now? All I ask for is a week of relaxation and no problems, and now I've met two of you in one place. That is never a good sign."

"Hmm...stay here and wait for something bad to happen, or follow her and wait for something bad to happen?  Decisions, decisions... Might as well go after her. I mean you only live once. Well, not me, well me now, not me before." A man stared at The Doctor as he babbled on to himself before rushing after Tyra. "Spikey hair, still as skinny as ever, and you've got a new pet!" He says to his younger self, catching up to a yelling Tyra. "She's still mad, you're still mad."
Wait a minute, with 10 came even more trouble no doubt. More than one Doctor always means trouble, and trouble was fun! "Oh silly Tyra, with your family background there nothing but problems," he says sarcastically. But seriously, New York was dangerous. Even without the whole disruption thing.  Hell, right now someone could probably jump out of a back alley and rob them blind.

The Doctor went to answer his friends question when the sudden appearance of Tyra. His eyes grew wide, his ears perked up and listened to the frantic speaking woman in front of him. Then as she finally stopped, The Doctor pressed his hands against the sides of her temple, quickly exhaled and closed his eyes. Once finding the thing he was looking for, The Doctor released his grip on Tyra and opened his eyes, "Ok it's not that" he mumbled, sniffing as he peered around the group, "Then what is it? And why in New York?".

Finally laying eyes on his future self and registering who he was, The Doctor grinned widely, "Feeling groovy today?" he joked with his future self before turning to Tyra. Immediately his grin faded down to a flat expression, "Sorry" he mumbled, "Why are you in New York by the way?" he questioned her.

"I suppose it was too much to ask for a simple vacation." Tyra grumbled under her breath, arms crossing over her chest and foot tapping away on the concrete in front of her impaitently. "Look, I'm tired, I'm irritable, hungry and there is no coffee in my hand. I'm going to have a short temper. So you lot can go... Investigate all you want, I'm ignoring the problem you have and going along my way." She said quickly, casting a wry glance around at the three people standing there then brushed past the Doctor in front of her on her way to the next cafe down the road.

"Oh, and for your information. Not everyone has a handy little box to relax in when things get to be too much. Some of us actually live in houses and such. Just a little tip for ya, Doctor." Tyra called back to them, walking backwards in the process then spun back around to disappear into the morning crowds.

"But you do!" The Doctor called after her before losing sight of her form in the chaotic clusters of people scattered throughout the sidewalk and roads. Sighing, The Doctor looked back to Emma, "So...those sights, i guess it will be a first time for both of us then..well...for these eyes anyway." turning back to the empire state building, The Doctor sniffed and placed his hands nonchalantly into his pockets, "I was there...when it was just getting finished. Me and my friend..Martha her name was. That reminds me, i need to call her back sometime..never got a chance to".

Stopping his ramble from proceeding any further, The Doctor glanced back to where Tyra had wondered off then peered over to his future incarnation with an arched eyebrow as if to tell him, Keep your eyes open before he turned his attention once more away from him and walked towards the empire state building. People began to brush past his arms and shoulders to try and squeeze by as he looked back to Emma to make sure she was coming, "Come on Emma, don't want to get lost here" he called out to her.

Grumbling under her breath, Tyra stuck her hands into her pockets and stalked along the sidewalk, eyes focused on the ground with each step she took, trying to work off the irritation from seeing the one person, in two forms, she didn't want to see at the time. "Whenever he shows up, something happens. Every time." She snapped at no one, causing several people to step aside and cast her a wary glance. Keeping her head down, Tyra made her way down several streets, never paying attention until finally she noticed the sidewalk was empty.

Looking up, she frowned at her surroundings, empty buildings, broken down houses, dirty streets filled with litter and cars with shattered windows. "Alright then... My mother is showing in me." She sighed, sitting down on the sidewalk with a huff of air, her chin cupped in her hands and eyes locked on a piece of paper as it shifted from side to side in front of her. "Always ending up in the spookiest place when I don't pay attention. Now there's going to be someone or something that jumps out and threatens my life or tries to take me captive.

Several minutes later, she glanced at her watch and scowled. "So much for that. Might as well find my way back then." With a groan, Tyra got to her feet and glanced around the road with a grimace of confusion. "Knowing my luck, I'll stumble into something dangerous, usually do." With that, she stepped off down the sidewalk, hands tucked back into her pockets along the way.
