The Doctor is stuck under a flickering streetlamp, you are on the opposite side of the street. It's midnight, no moon or stars, the only lights around are the lamp the Doctor is under, and the light in front of a closed store you stand under.
The only way to the Doctor is to cross the dark street, easy, right? Wrong. This planet is well-known for being infested with Vashta Nerada. Any shadow anywhere could be infested with them. You have a small pack on your back with several items in it that you could use to get to him.
Chester sat up and rubbed the back of his head. Then he scanned his surroundings. He was standing on some sort of street, completely black except for the two lights, the one blanketing him and the sidewalk he was on. The other light was across the street, and even it wasn't working too well, flickering all the time. A dense fog covered the sky, blocking out any light from the moon or stars. It was cold out, and Chester shivered slightly, but kept his focus on his surroundings. He was standing next to a bakery, now obviously closed. The street seemed empty, populated only by the dark. The only other occupant of the street was a man, slumped next to the street lamp. He didn't appear to be conscious.
Chester turned, and felt his foot kick a large object. He looked down to see that it was a pack. Army standard. He picked it up. It contained only seven objects:
a carrot, a chicken leg wrapped in tinfoil, a book of matches, a flashlight, a rubber duck, and a furled up grey raincoat. Sitting at the bottom of the pack, below the raincoat, was an odd looking device. It was another flashlight, only oddly shaped and silver, with a blue light.
No guns he thought. This is bad. his own holster was empty, and he hated it when he had an empty gun, or none at all. Feeling hungry, Chester unwrapped the tinfoil and ate the leg. he didn't really like vegetables, so he tossed it.
And watched it disappear completely into the dark. Gone. The carrot was gone. Whatever lay in the night was certainly capable of devouring a carrot quickly. His plans of walking home would have to be cancelled.
Unless...he pulled out the flashlight. Whatever it was that was out there couldn't enter the light. He put the rest of the objects in the bag, flicked the light on, went and got the bum from under the lamp, moved him to the better source of light, and proceeded home.
