Needed Madness

The water was high enough that Romana needed to tread water before the Overseer acted. And he acted quite suddenly. All at once the water was gone, Romana's clothes were dry, and she was positively blinded by a fierce, white light.

After a second, it was gone, and Romana's eyes adjusted to the normally lit room. She felt the Doctor's hand on her shoulder.

"All the years we've been together, you don't know that we can tele-communicate by any touch?"

I thought it would be less noticeable than simply touching you and you suddenly coming to a conclusion. She responded.

"I'm not complaining though "

This earned the Doctor a light smack in the stomach before she knelt down next to him. A slender finger reached out to touch the edges. They were warm.

"Well need to know exactly what they're using to widen the cracks," she said. "Some kind of temporal canon, maybe?"

The Doctor arched his eyebrow, peering into the brightness of the crack as he pondered the question given to him by Romana. Then suddenly he could make out something, a form in the distance. The Doctor leaned in closer to try and get a better look, placing his hands on the side as he peered into it, making sure not to accidentally fall through. "Hang on..i can see something" He mumbled, squinting as he spoke, "Something...something coming towards-".

Before The Doctor could finish his sentence, he quickly propelled away from the crack and pushed himself, and Romana out of the way. A loud thud and the sound of steam roared from behind The Doctor as he held himself up from falling onto Romana and peered behind his shoulder. "Close call" He mumbled with a sniff as he looked back down to Romana, "What are you doing down there for? Come on!" he said, quickly jumping to his feet and offering her a hand.

The Overseer marched in with his guard, "What the hell is going on here?!" he roared; The Doctor turned around, first to The Overseer then to the thing that came through the crack. A pure red, steaming hot, body laid across the floor in front of The Doctor and The Overseer, smoke rising up from it as heat emitted from its skin. "W-what is it? A Time Lord?" The Overseer asked, shocked, "No" The Doctor quickly replied, squatting down next to the body, "I know the smell of a burning Time Lord..and this isn't it." he flashed The Overseer a cold glare. The Overseer nodded and covered his mouth with his hand, "I-i'l leave you to it then.." he stuttered as he rushed out of the room, taken back by the smell. The Doctor peered back to the body, "Cracks are beginning to open up everywhere..and anywhere. There's no telling where he or she came from...or who they were".

Romana puffed out a sigh, and took the Doctor's hand. Bodies flying through the crack? Was that really what had just happened? She knelt down next to the body, observing without touching.

"Flash burned. They were dead before they knew what hit them," she said, then looked at the Doctor. "We should leave before something else comes catapulting through the crack."

The Doctor nodded, "The more things that come and go through, the more unstable the fissures between the two dimensions will become" he commented before peering over to the crack and standing up. "But now we know what can pass through the crack..there's no telling how long he had to endure pain but..i know the crack closes. Future incarnation memories falling back onto me...long story". Sighing, The Doctor looked back to the steaming hot body then once more to the crack, a smirk raising onto his face, "What's say it couldn't survive another pass through?" he asked both Romana and himself.

Turning back to the body, The Doctor pulled a small round device from his pocket and squatted down beside the body. "This is a tracking device...it's connected with my TARDIS. If we send this body back through the crack it will force it closed. But! If i can track it then i can find my way back to Gallifrey..there i am going to have to form a friendship all my previous selves are screaming at me not to do. Rassilon is the only one with the power to bring the entire planet back..you and I both know that". Looking up at Romana, The Doctor arched his eyebrow, "If you can convince The Overseer to help us then he can fix your TARDIS. From there you can help me from the outside because i got a feeling i will need a pretty quick escape..and it might take both our TARDIS' to do it".

"What?" The Doctor spoke so much that Romana didn't even know where to start. "Doctor you're not going in there! He wants you in the crack. You going in there is just playing into his hand! And how am I supposed to convince him, anyway? I doubt he trusts me. And Rassilon, he..." Romana shook her head.

"Look, let me go to Rassilon. He may not be able to stand me, but he knows I wouldn't lie about something this important."

The Doctor rolled his eyes, knowing that Romana was right but refusing to believe it until he could think of no other reply accept for, "Oh alright then" and a reluctant nod of the head. "We still need to convince 'Seer of repairing your TARDIS" He thought out loud, rubbing the back of his head before an idea rushed into his mind along with a playful smirk across his face, "Maybe you can persuade him with your feminine wiles-".

Just as The Doctor began to chuckle, the sound of the door opening echoed through the room, The Doctor quickly bolted to the other door in time to barely escape The Overseer's sight. The Overseer sauntered into the room, his eyes glancing over the crack, the body then finally to Romana, "Why haven't you done what i said?! Where is The Doctor?! He better be in that crack or else..i swear to Rassilon..i will toss you in there myself!".

Since when do I have feminine wiles!? Romana thought as the Doctor disappeared and the Overseer entered.

"We can't," she said. "We have to find out what they're using to pry the crack open and in order to do that one of us needs to be on the other side of the crack and one of us over here... but we both need a TARDIS. To... communicate with each other and... coordinate the effort."

The Overseer narrowed his eyes as he peered down to Romana, "Wh-" he started, but before he could finish, The Doctor barged in, quickly moving to Romana's side. "Yes! Sorry! Had to...go to the bathroom. Just a sudden rush, you know how those sort of things are. Anyways! As Romana was saying, the dual power of our TARDIS' could open the crack more then what it already is..using the matrix of our TARDIS' at the same exact time and at this point to rip it open". The Overseer curiously peered in between both The Doctor and Romana before releasing a sigh and nodding his head.

"Makes sense!" He proclaimed with gusto as he snapped both his fingers, "There! Your TARDIS is repaired and sitting right next to The Doctor's..but i must tell you. There's a little present on both of them..it lets me know exactly what your doing and where". With a menacingly unstable laugh, The Overseer turned around and exited the room, leaving The Doctor and Romana alone once more. The Doctor peered over to Romana, sighing as he placed his hands into his pockets, "Well then...let's go find us a planet".

Romana sighed and nodded. She was beginning to lose hope they'd be able to stop the Overseer, what with all his intrusions. Would he be able to hear them as well, once in their TARDISes?

Romana opened the door to the tall, cylindrical, pristine white TARDIS next to the Doctor's. Inside, all the broken and scorched bits had been completely erased. There was no trace of the flight she'd been through, except for the burns still on her body.

"Alright Doctor, I hope you know what you're doing," she said to herself, before flipping a few switches to prepare for dematerialization.

The Doctor walked in after Romana, immediately searching for the implanted device The Overseer had constructed. Once they got to the control console, The Doctor flashed a smirk as he immediately noticed the device. Though not plain to see for someone new entering the TARDIS or a casual friend, the fob watch resting up against the time rotor was obvious to The Doctor, who had visited Romana's TARDIS countless times. "Make sure you get into position..i will send you the coordinates from my TARDIS. I believe my spot is near the galactic seven mooned ice meteorite, you know, the one that serves amazing ice cream..well..besides the cherry flavored..not very fond of that one..mmmm banana".

Noticing he was getting off topic, The Doctor shook his head and positioned himself behind the fob watch with a few steps backward. Quickly grabbing the fob watch, The Doctor opened it up and smashed the inside. The Overseer roared with anger, "No!! Damn him!!!" he proclaimed, rushing out and into the center lobby of The Axis. His attention turned towards the two TARDIS'. "Go. You need to be there first, i'll take care of The Overseer" The Doctor told Romana, bolting down towards her doors, "Just don't get Rassilon mad!" he concluded just before exiting her TARDIS.

Romana stood in shock as the Doctor acted quickly and then left her. Instinct told her to run out after him (how could he manage the Overseer without her?), but his words made her stay. The urgency was clear, and Gallifrey depended on it. But he could be wrong.

In the end, it came down to whether or not she trusted him. Romana threw the lever, finalizing the dematerialization sequence.

"You'd better know what you're doing, Doctor!" Her TARDIS began to shake as it entered the crack. Her instruments went wild, the screens showing her nothing and everything in the same instant. An enormous amount of energy was being used to slip through the crack, and the groaning of her TARDIS proved it. More and more violently the shaking continued. Romana gripped the edges of the center console to keep from falling down.

And then, quite suddenly, it was over.
