Killing Time

The Doctor adjusted his tie as he slowly walked forwards across the wet orange floor. The rain poured down on him like a huge rock pressing down on his shoulders. "Stay back!" the masked man called to him, "stay back or I shoot!" The Doctor stopped. "I'm holding the first thing that ever crawled out of the ocean, if I kill it now then the Human race and every other animal on the planet ceases to exist." There was a crackling in the Doctor's ear, "You have to stop him!" UNIT commander Higgins called through from the year 2014. The Doctor raised his hands defensively against the man in the balaclava with the gun. "The government will wire 20 million US dollars to the account I gave them or I will shoot." The Doctor hesitated, "you're mad," he said in a slow and low voice that echoed around the empty surroundings. "You'll kill everyone who ever lived on this world, including yourself..." The man laughed. "A life without money isn't a life worth living!" The Doctor's eyes narrowed. "Put the gun down..." The man made no movement to do so. The Doctor reached into his pocket slowly...

"Okay, Doctor. This seems pretty serious..." Nate's voice came over the communicator that Higgins had given to 12. "Reach into your pocket slowly. "Pass over the communicator to him. Get him to put it into his ear. You should be able to amplify the frequency with that screwdriver thing of yours. That should... distract him..." Nate ran a hand through his hair anxiously. It wasn't every day that this kind of thing happened and to be honest, when he became an extraterrestrial investigator, he hadn't considered he'd end up having the save the human race from the threat of never existing. Or help to save it anyway. He grinned. He'd definitely made the right career choice.

The Doctor hesitated, holding down the masked man's stare. "Tell them yourself..." he said and pulled the communicator from his ear, his other hand still in his pocket. He tossed over the communicator. The man with the balaclava looked at the Doctor suspiciously for a moment. The Doctor's fingers closed around his Sonic in his pocket. There was a thin layer of sweat starting to form on his knuckles. The man decided it was safe and placed the communicator into his ear. "Hello? Who am I talking to?" he said unnecessarily loudly. The Doctor grinned and adjusted the Sonic's settings pressing down on the end. There was a low buzzing then suddenly the man screamed out in pain. "There's the feedback I was looking for..." The Doctor smirked as his enemy fell to his knees screaming in agony then collapsing face down unconscious in the mud. The creature that had been in his hand slithered away into the Doctor's hands. He smiled warmly at it and raised it to his face, "There there, You're safe now. And you have such an existence ahead of you. Go!" With those words he released the creature back down to the ground and it hesitated for a moment then slid away.

Nate laughed. It'd worked. He spun around on the chair in happiness until he caught the look in Higgins' eye and stopped himself. "Sir." he nodded respectfully, "Permission to party?" Higgins glared at him for a moment then laughed. "Permission granted." Then he spoke into his own communicator hoping the Doctor was back on the other end, "Doctor, bring the criminal home. And the device of course."

The Doctor took a moment to catch his breath, he lacked the youth and exuberance of his previous incarnation. Then, straightening himself out, he flipped the sonic in the air and catching it, he strolled back to the TARDIS. Placed carefully into his pocket was the device that the man had used to travel back. Crafted from stolen TARDIS parts, UNIT expected him to bring it home. Instead the Doctor disassembled it, reinstalling the relevant parts to the console room then he took off. "Sorry Higgins..." he muttered.

"Curse it!" Higgins shouted suddenly. Nate jumped. "We've lost contact with the Doctor. He's taken the device!" Nate stayed quiet, a rare delicacy. "We need to get. it. back." he shouted straight into the back of Nate's head. Nate stood up: "I think I can help with that..."
