| Name: SyreniAppearance: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Syreni are basically humanoid, but have many fish-like features. Their legs and lower arms are covered in scales. They have fins on each side of their legs and on the undersides of their arms. Their fingers are webbed, and their hair is more of a fin texture than mammal hair. They breathe through gills on their sides. They communicate psychically, since underwater speech is difficult to make with a humanoid voice box, let alone comprehend. They’re herbivores. Since they’re more prey than predator, they’ve adapted to feel movement in water, and are very sensitive to touch. Because of their environment, they’re fast swimmers. Their skin varies among the blue/purple spectrum (depending on the darkness of their environment), while their scales and fins are greyscale. Some Syreni have legs, but some have evolved tails. The ones nearer shores tend to have legs, while those in rougher currents or in more dangerous places have tails so they can swim faster. The lifespan of a Syreni is much longer than a human’s - near triple.Attitude: Syreni are mostly a lone wolf kind of race. They keep to themselves. They often create hoards, much like dragons, out of things they find in sunken ships. Most children inherit some of their parents’ treasures for their own hoard once they’ve passed on. They’re pretty territorial over their hoards, which is why they live so far apart. Sometimes small clusters will form in especially dangerous areas - areas where it is useful to be in a group. They’re more of a practical race than anything else - emotions are not their strong suit, and they’re led by what they feel is logical. This is not to say that they are completely void of emotion, but more that it isn’t as important to them as it is in human society. Mostly, they are curious just for the sake of being curious - which is the main reason they collect so much.Technology: Syreni don’t see much of a use for technology. Electrical things wouldn’t work underwater. They use what they can from the ships they steal from, but that’s about it. They’re fairly primitive, in that sense, but don’t mind that a bit. They don’t aim for that kind of growth. They just want large hoards.Backstory: Syreni are actually from Earth. They’re what sparked the legends of mermaids. They didn’t give themselves a name - it’s just what has formed from the legends. They’re literally just “mermaid” in Latin. Because of their psychic communication, many men on ships have claimed they’re being lured in by a siren’s song. That’s just because their language sounds melodic. Over time, as generations have passed down their treasures, most Syreni have fairly sizable hoards. They still seek additional treasure, and are often moving their hoards or hiding them because of humans looking for it for themselves. Present: Lots of people say mermaids aren’t real - this is because these days, ships don’t carry nearly as many interesting things. Just a lot of cargo. The Syreni don’t bother these commercial ships - mostly just pirates who are out for the finer things. And who would believe a daft old pirate? | |
