It was a relatively peaceful afternoon, following the celebration of Independence Day. It was the middle of summer, and most people were just relaxing. Kids played outside with their friends, or went swimming, while most adults seemed to be staying indoors to avoid the heat, though a few were out trying to get a tan and some were gardening or sitting on their porch sipping a cool drink. It was all part of a normal, quiet, summer day.
In a quiet cemetery on one end of town, strange things were happening. A few graves sank in on themselves, as if the coffin under the dirt was somehow removed from underneath. A couple of people were making their way toward town with a lumbering, staggering gait. Their faces were partly decomposed and their clothes were tattered and old, slightly deteriorated.
In another part of town, the library was closing for the evening. Brooke gathered up the books she was checking out, and after having the librarian check the books out, the girl tucked them carefully into her Nintendo messenger bag that she always carried, and put the strap over her shoulder. She pulled her brown hair free of the strap and then smiled a little at the librarian, thanking the woman before she went outside, reluctant to leave the quiet sanctuary of the library.
With a soft sigh, Brooke mentally observed that her 18th birthday was only two days away now. She folded her arms and began the walk homeward. She didn't really want to go home; she wished she could stay at the library all the time. But they wouldn't let her, because they had to close up every evening at 7pm. She walked slowly down the sidewalk, listening to the crickets hiding in the grass, and the katydids in the trees. She only got two, somewhat small books this time, which was unusual for her. She had The Journey to the Center of the Earth, by Jules Vern, and Shadows of the Empire, a Star Wars book, by Steve Perry. Her plan was to read them both tonight and probably into the morning, then return them when she came to the library the following day.
Plans don't always go the way they are intended, though, and Brooke's plan wasn't one of those which would go the way it was intended to go. As she was slowly walking home, in no hurry to get there, something very unusual and unexpected happened. She noticed a man walking strangely. He seemed to be dragging his left keg in a major limp, and he looked odd. She stopped and frowned a little as she saw him, and thought at first that he was drunk. She was hoping he wouldn't see her and cause any trouble, when she noticed how his clothes looked kind of ripped up, like maybe he'd been beat up really bad, or been stranded on an island for a few years or something. But he looked very pale to have been on an island, and there was something really wrong about this guy.
As he turned toward Brooke, noticing her, she felt very uneasy when he began to drag himself toward her. She hesitated, then began backing away slowly. "What do you want?" She asked, nervous. The strange man kept coming without replying. Brooke felt even more uneasy, and wondered if she should run. She backed up a little more, then jumped slightly as her back ran into a tree that was behind her. The girl looked back forward, at the man, and was startled to realize, now that he was closer, that he wasn't just pale, he was partly decomposed.
Her brown eyes widened as she realized with a shock that this was a zombie. A real, actual zombie. She quickly moved away from the tree, just as the zombie swung an arm at her as if to hitm, or may grab, her. Ducking quickly away from it, Brooke started to run but she didn't see that she was standing on her shoestring. She let out a sharp cry as she tripped and fell face-first onto the ground. She landed on her hands and knees, scuffing her palms slightly on the concrete sidewalk. Her knees hurt a bit too, but right now she was more worried about the zombie coming for her.
She hastily scrambled up to her feet and spun to face him, her eyes wide in fear. "Get away from me!" She yelled at it, trying not to panic as she tried to find a way past him. There were some buildings behind her, blocking her exit, and she backed up until she was pressed up against the inside corner where the two buildings joined in the alley. She looked around swiftly, trying to think of some plan to get out of this while trying to fight off a determined zombie at the same time. She should have just run, she realized.
She wondered if all the stories were true, about zombies biting people and infecting them. What if it bit her? How long would she have? She didn't want to die that way. She fought harder, trying to get away from it, but she had only her feet and her fingernails to use as a weapon. And there were others joining it. She saw a woman zombie and another man, entering the alley and dragging toward her. It was just like something out of a zombie film. "Help.. Please, someone help.." She called out, inwardly struggling not to let panic take over. But there was no one around, so no one would hear her, and no one would be coming to save her.
Tears filled her eyes as she realized this. She was going to be killed by a zombie. That was definitely not how she wanted to die, although she supposed it was much more memorable and unique from how anyone in real life had ever died, so far. She wondered if it would eat her, and if she would be recognizable when it had finished. She figured they could identify her from her Nintendo bag. Would anyone bother coming to her funeral? Would there even be one? Maybe Tom would come if he was told about it. That made her think about him, and she wondered what Tom was doing right now, and how he would react if and when he heard the news. She fingered the 1up necklace she wore, holding it tightly. "Please! Someone help me!" She called, with her back braced up against the wall and using her feet to try to push the zombie back away from her. Would anyone bother to come to her rescue?

| Suddenly, a potted plant was smashed into the head of one of the zombies, effectively knocking it down. A man in a tweed jacket and bow-tie peeked his head into the alley way, eyebrows raising at the young woman trapped at the end of it.
"What are you doing back there? Come on," he shouted, gesturing for her to escape. In the meantime, he shoved the two remaining zombies into each other, sending them tumbling to the ground. Clapping his hands, he raised his arms in a short victory before crouching down and beginning to scan them with the sonic. He began with the one he'd knocked over with the pot before waving his screwdriver over the pair fumbling over each other in their attempt to stand back up. Righting himself, he flicked out the sonic, examining the readings with a look of confusion. "No, no, no, this isn't right," he muttered, tapping his forehead with the sonic in frustration. "Hang on," he murmured, crouching back down to examine the one he'd hit with the plant.
It had clearly gone unconscious, which made perfect sense according to the readings he'd received, but didn't quite make sense in his mind. He held open its eyelids, leaning in close to see what was inside. The cornea of the eye was still fogged, meaning if his conclusion was right, the decay wasn't being reversed. That would make stumbling around like this a bit difficult, right? How could they see what they were after? Unless...
"You, gamer girl," the Doctor called, straightening back up, shoving the other two recovering zombies back down in the process. "What have you got on you? Anything particularly smelly? You have showered today, haven't you?" he interrogated, striding over to her, sonic in hand.

| Tom hadn't realized they'd even landed until the Doctor was halfway out the door. Grabbing his bag and slinging it over his shoulder as he had to half-sprint to catch up, he followed after him. Had he known running was a requirement, he likely wouldn't have gone with the strange man in the first place. Although, how could he refuse such an adventure? He just caught up in time to hear the Doctor talking to someone.
Panting, he came to a stop behind the man and looked around. There was something familiar about this place. He wondered where he was, when he was. Some time in the summer, he guessed, based on the weather. Then, he noticed the zombies and nearly jumped out of his skin, "Whoa!! Are those what I think they are?!" He was simultaneously terrified and excited. Years of video games and movies had prepared him for this moment. But he didn't have a weapon, and he wasn't exactly strong per se.
Looking past the zombies, he noticed the girl. She looked quite familiar as well, perhaps more familiar than the place. Nerdy shirt, Nintendo bag, 1-UP necklace. "Brooke!" Tom blurted out. He hadn't seen her in so long. Come to think of it, she didn't look too much older than when last he saw her. Maybe a year or two, but no more. He went toward the two, making sure not to touch any of the zombies as he did so. "Doctor, when are we?"

| Brooke was sure that she was about to die. She'd thought about it for years now, but she never expected for it to happen like this. She'd thought that she might take some poison and sleeping pills and just..die in her sleep, painlessly. Not eaten alive by savage zombies. And then suddenly, it was plants vs zombies? She had heard of that game, all over school, but she didn't have a phone so she hadn't really ever played it. When she did play games, she played the ones that mattered enough to play, like Mario and Zelda and Tetris. Confused, she backed away at the sudden stranger that was there talking to her, and then examining the zombies. She remained pressed against the wall, staring with wide eyes at the stranger with the British accent.
She was just trying to figure out whether she should thank him for saving her, or run away and hide somewhere, or maybe try to answer his questions but she didn't really want to do that, when suddenly a familiar face appeared. Her eyes went round in surprise and her jaw dropped a little bit, for just a second before she uttered in disbelief, "Tom?" This was impossible, wasn't it? She hadn't seen him in like three years, and suddenly, just when she was thinking she was about to die, and thinking about Tom and if he would ever find out about it, and also sort of wishing he was there... there he was! She stared at the guy in amazement, but didn't move from her place. Was this some sort of wild dream?
"I..you..but I.." She stammered, then glanced at his friend with the weird thing he seemed to be scanning the zombies with. After a bit of a delayed reaction she answered one of his questions. "I..no, they just..wanted to eat me, I think." She wrapped her arms around her middle, awkward about this entire situation, and maybe appeared as if she wished she could just sorta blend in with the wall behind her. And what sort of question was that Tom just asked? When are they? She gave him a puzzled look at that. "You're.. in our hometown, silly.. and it's the fifth of July." She looked a little more closely at him. He sure had aged a lot since going off to college. He looked older than she would have expected. Glancing back at the stranger, briefly, she wondered who he is, and then looked back at Tom. "I..missed you.." She mentioned quietly. "Um..how's college?" That seemed like a perfectly normal question to ask, right? Maybe not with zombies lurking around, but she couldn't think of anything else to say.

| "Oh, there you are," the Doctor remarked, turning on his heels as Tom scooted past the zombies. "It's..." he glanced at his watch quickly, "2012. Do you two know each other?" He remarked, gesturing between the two of them with his sonic. "Lovely. Nice to meet you, Brooke, was it?" He grabbed her hand with both of his, shaking it rather aggressively. "Tommy here's my intern. I'm Dr. Smith. We're doing a bit of field work, and um," he glanced over his shoulders at the struggling corpses with a grimace, "It's a work in progress."
Turning around, the Doctor strode back towards the two conscious bodies, looping their arms around his shoulders. They reached out ahead of them towards the two humans, but paid virtually no attention to the time lord. "Know what's strange about these zombies? Have you noticed yet?" He poked at the bow-tie on the man, nodding in approval. "They're quite nicely dressed," he continued, looking over the woman's ripped dress. "More or less," he amended with a shrug, dropping their arms and shoving them back down for the third time, picking up the discarded potted plant.
"Either the zombies have only reached formal events, or these are fresh from the grave," he explained, scanning the lot of them once more. He checked the readings and nodded in approval. "They've long passed their expiration date. Tommy!" He spun back around, passing the flowers to him. "For your girlfriend," he grinned, nodding towards Brooke.

| "Just Tom, if you don't mind. Wow... 2012," Tom carded a hand through his hair, ignoring the Doctor's question. Five years. She must be, what, 17? 18? "College was all right. I graduated about a year ago. Or a few years from now? It's complicated. Time travel." He shrugged, as if that were a normal thing to say. It wasn't, he knew that, but he didn't know how else to explain it. "I missed you, too," he sighed and slumped against the wall, sliding down to sit beside her, as far from the zombies as he could manage.
He scoffed, "Maybe they just got back from an opera." Raising a brow at the Doctor and the zombies, he looked more closely. They were dressed pretty well for zombies. So these were really undead, then, and not infected humans. He had to wonder if he and Brooke could actually be infected, if bitten, and voiced his concerns, "What happens if they bite us? For that matter, why aren't they after you?"
"She's not..." Tom started to protest, but instead simply took the flower and passed it to Brooke. Friends can give friends flowers. That's a normal thing to do. Maybe less normal when the flower was used to fight a zombie, but that was neither here nor there. "Have you managed to escape your 'family' yet?" he questioned Brooke, really hoping she had.

| Brooke looked confused by the oddness of what the stranger said in reply to Tom. "Of course it's 2012.." She answered when he spoke up to tell Tom that it was 2012. Why would that be a big surprise? She looked at Tom, even more confused when he seemed surprised by the year. She tilted her head in confusion at him mentioning that he was done with college. "Oh. Well that was.. fast?" She wasn't sure what else to say there, but then looked even more baffled by the mention of time travel. She stared at her friend for a moment upon hearing him say that. "Time travel?" She repeated, and looked skeptical. She tilted her head at him. "So, like, do you have a DeLorean parked around the corner or something?" Had she somehow fallen into Back to the Future? Or maybe, this was some crazy dream and they were in Quantum Leap. Dr Smith..? Or maybe he was really Dr Sam Beckett?
She turned back to the stranger in the bow tie who had introduced himself as Dr Smith, and claimed that Tom was his intern? That made no sense, Tom was in college for computerly things. But maybe he had some sort of doctorate degree in that, and Tom was an intern.. Her mind was racing as Dr Smith asked something about the zombies. "Um.. yeah.." She fidgeted with her charm bracelet, wanting to get somewhere safe. "Yeah. They're.. dead." She looked slightly pale at that. "That..." She indicated the female, "that's Ms Harber.. she died like a year ago.." She actually looked a little bit sick at that. "That guy.. he's umm.." She hesitated, trying to recall the guy. "Oh. Right. Mr Motley, a teacher from fifth grade...remember?" She glanced at Tom while struggling to keep from being too creeped out by all this weirdness. "He got like, food poisoning or something like that.." The other guy though, the one she'd been struggling with and had gotten hit with a flower po, she had never seen before. "That one.." She shivered. "I think he's been dead longer than I've been alive.. maybe?"
Suddenly she was being handed flowers. She looked at them in bafflement, before looking up at Dr Smith, since he was the one who told Tom to give them to her. "Um. Yeah. Tom is..no." She shook her head at the 'girlfriend' comment, and then proceeded to ignore Tom's question concerning her 'family'. "Umm." She hesitated, awkwardly holding the flowers because she wasn't sure what to do with them. "So, uh. Dr Smith, right?" She asked, mostly rhetorically. "Could we like.. you know, get out of here?" She asked quietly. "I mean like.. this doesn't really seem like such a good place to just.. chat? Catch up on news? Whatever.." She fidgeted a little. "And like, if there's a zombie invasion going on maybe we should sorta like, find out what's up with it and how to.. you know, stop it." She realized that was probably a stupid thing to say. Of course that was the best thing to do.
"We could.. maybe.. check the library for stuff about zombies?" She added in a tiny voice, figuring that was even dumber to say. Then as she looked up from staring at the ground, she widened her eyes. "Look out.. behind you!" She pointed to another couple of zombies that were moving toward them. There were two males, one having been dead probably a few years, while the other must have been dead for a few months. They were both heading straight for their group.

| He didn't really know who this girl was, yet, but she seemed to be brimming with information. He liked her.
At the warning, the Doctor spun around, scowling at the appearance of two other bodies. He was really hoping he wasn't going to have to deal with this so quickly. "Aaaagh, I need to think," he complained, smacking his head and turning around. "Tommy and friend, we're getting out of here," he announced, moving to stand in-between them. Holding his sonic in the air, he grinned as the TARDIS materialized around them, watching as the zombies approached too slowly to make it inside. Once the room had fully appeared, he sprinted to the console and looked outside, watching the creatures slam themselves into the door. "Oh, now that's interesting..."
He turned around and smirked at the thumping before speeding around to the other side of the console, preparing some coordinates. "Brooke, I hate to tell you this, but I lied," he begun, slamming a lever down. The TARDIS began to groan and shake a bit before settling down again as it landed. The Doctor peeked his head around the console with an falsely apologetic grin. "My name's not Smith."

| Things happened pretty fast. One moment, they were being bombarded by zombies on all sides, and the next.. some sort of large, spaceshipy, sci fi-y type room was around them. Brooke stayed frozen in place, staring all around her. What was this? What was going on? Was it some sort of crazy dream? She had never had a dream this vivid, but it sure seemed like one, what was zombies and Tom showing up out of nowhere, and then this happening? She took a small step back, her eyes wide as she took it all in. "Wh..where.." She looked at Tom, then at the guy who was announcing that he had lied about his name. She actually felt vaguely dizzy, and lightly grabbed onto a nearby railing. "Where are we?" She asked in a small voice, the surprise of it startling her so much she didn't know what exactly to think.
Looking back at the stranger, she took a deep breath and tried to focus on what was going on, rather than the strangeness of it all. "Uh...ok? So... um, if you aren't Dr. Smith.. who are you?" She asked a little warily, one hand absently toying the zipper on her bag. "I mean..why tell me a fake name at all?" She wondered, confused. She glanced at Tom and back at him, and wondered if Tom was a friend of his, or maybe he had abducted him and.. no, surely not. He'd have him tied up or something if that was the case, right?
She shook her head slightly as if to clear those thoughts away, and glanced toward the door. "More importantly... what are we going to do about those.. zombies? Inferi?" She asked, unsure what else to call them. "And... I mean.. it kinda seems like, maybe, we ought to figure out what's causing this to happen, you know?" She added, a little awkwardly. "I mean, like, there must be something reasonable to explain what's going on, right..? Cause, like, the dead don't just pop out of their graves and attack people on an everyday basis, so.. there must be something that's causing it to happen, right?" She asked, glancing from one guy to the other and feeling kind of uncomfortable, like someone was going to tell her she was ridiculous or dumb for something she said.
