Personality: Curious is the first word that comes to mind when considering Jay Andrews. He tends to leap immediately towards the unknown in the hopes of studying and understanding it. In his mind there is nothing beyond the comprehension of a determined researcher. A result of this is that he rarely considers the potential consequences of any project or research he might undertake. Science for its own sake tends to be his thought.
This great curiosity has lead to his second and third attributes one might notice as well: He is keenly intelligent (in fact, most would say 'a genius!') and rather adventurous. He tends, as well, towards a degree of hyperactivity coupled, almost paradoxically, with single mindedness towards his project of the moment and will often oscillate from one project to another, shutting out the rest of the world and even ignoring such base needs as sleep or food!
In spite of it all, though, he has a fascination with the stars and would quickly trade off quite a bit for the chance to see them up close. To interact with alien life forms, to stand on worlds not his own...

Dream:
Science keeps him going, of course. To seek out the strange, the bizarre, the anomalous and to examine it. To make sense of it! Also, to go to space. To see the stars even if he has to build the craft himself!
History: We all hear stories about them. The twelve year old who polls a genius IQ from MENSA's tests. The child who graduates college before they've even finished puberty. They're rare, but they happen. Such was the case with Jay, who rapidly went through the usual niceties of education. Finding himself quickly enamored of the wonderful machines and great, computers of the worlds around him (and the engineering departments of the colleges that courted him!). It didn't take long to receive the degrees he wanted and, in all honesty, had he been old enough to work at the time he likely would have immediately settled into a rather humdrum life behind a desk somewhere, gathering dust as just another scientist in a think tank.
Indeed, that likely WAS his plan until an encounter came about that changed... everything. Anywhere you go on Earth you'll find urban legends. Strange stories that spring up from nowhere and leave a mark on the local populace. Frogmen, Sasquatch... the Yeti. These things can capture the minds of otherwise sane adults... is it any wonder a bored child, who felt he had conquered the mental requirements around him would find himself so fascinated as well?
Such Fortean phenomena he began to investigate with a certain curiosity and methodical approach. Starting in his local area and fanning out. There were always stories to be found of metaphysical horrors, monsters and creatures from beyond the Earth... and eventually he finally encountered one. Or more than one, depending on how you look at it.
During one such adventure, he encountered a mysterious man who would refer to himself only as 'the Doctor'. Thinking relatively little of such a strange appellation at the time (even if that particular title had turned up frequently in connection to OTHER odd phenomena) Jay joined his investigation to the other man's, quickly becoming rather... subordinate to him in the events to come....
Although some memories of the event are oddly fuzzy for him, what IS certain is that at the end of it, Jay knew with absolute certainty aliens existed. That at least a few of the crazier urban legends of human society were real and... oh yes...
He was also 'offered' employment by UNIT as a 'scientific aid', something of a Junior equivalent to the 'Scientific Adviser' role that The Doctor was known to have taken on. It was an offer that Jay took with relish, seeing it as holding two benefits: Keeping him from getting bored with the world around him and... most importantly: what OTHER job was going to let him fiddle with alien technology as its basic description!?

"Well," Jay thought out loud, rummaging through the pack to take stock of what possessions he'd brought to this situation. "I think I've been in worse fixes, although not many. Or by much." He offered up (and likely lied to himself) cheerfully, laying each item out in a neat line. After some careful consideration, he picked up the chicken leg first, dangling it from two fingers before sending it in an under-hand toss out into the darkness between himself and the Doctor.
As feared, he didn't hear the squishy 'plop' of meat and skin hitting the pavement, but instead the 'clack' of a bone hitting it. For a few moments, he tried to do the mental math on how quickly the leg might have been devoured, and if it indicated a greater or lesser number of Vashta encircling them. He gave up rather quickly though, as too many factors were simply absent.
He hesitated a few moments, kneeling down and tapping each of the remaining items in turn, considering the possibilities each might present. His fingers bumped the Sonic Screwdriver as he picked it up, checking the dials, and buttons and other bits and pieces of its casing. Useful, but without an owner's manual COULD make things worse rather than better. Although how it could be 'worse' than surrounded by microscopic piranha wasn't terribly clear (well, the swarm getting to him would certainly be one way!)
His gaze turned, next, the chicken, and the rain coat. These three objects, he realized, would be the crux of the idea coming up. With some effort he managed to rip the raincoat into a length of... whatever the material happened to be. Possibly rubber, he surmised. A bit more work and he'd tied those strips into a length of cord, with one end noosed around the chicken's neck. Part two was easy enough. Tying the other end around the sonic screwdriver itself. He needed to have some guide-line, or at least a length that could be grabbed if he were throwing off-course.
"On three!" He shouted to the other man, swinging the chicken like a comical flail before sending it careening through the darkness, hoping that the fact they hadn't devoured the bone would mean that the Nerada wouldn't eat inorganic matter. If he was wrong, he still had a few remaining resources that he might be able to form a plan with. If he was right, it was all in the Doctor's court now.
So, he'd prefer to think it all hinged on his ability to catch rather than his OWN ability to throw.
